Museo Virtuale Polizzi Generosa
The virtual museum of Polizzi Generosa: the Triptych rebuilt in 3D and visited in VR, plus an immersive room with 360° projection telling the town's story.
Summary
The Triptych in VR and an immersive tour of the town.
A virtual museum for Polizzi Generosa, in Sicily: the famous Triptych of Polizzi Generosa fully reconstructed in 3D and visited in virtual reality, introduced by a video that tells its story and legend, and an immersive room with 360° projection on its walls, which takes the visitor on a tour of the town, telling its history and cultural heritage.
Problem
Making the town's heritage visible and attracting new visitors.
Polizzi Generosa wants to give more visibility to its cultural heritage and to tell the story of the town and of the Triptych in a single coherent tour, inside a multimedia museum. It needed a new, engaging way to do it: technologies that spark curiosity and attract new visitors, not only those who already know the town.
Approach
Two complementary experiences: the Triptych in VR and the immersive room.
The town's emblematic work and the town itself are told with two different tools. The Triptych, reconstructed in 3D from the high-resolution scan provided by the client, is observed up close in virtual reality, after a video that tells its story and legend; the history and heritage of Polizzi Generosa are walked through in the immersive room, where the 360° projection surrounds the viewer. The narration and texts of both experiences come from the client.
System
A virtual museum in two spaces.
The museum is made of the VR scene of the Triptych of Polizzi Generosa, preceded by the introductory video, and of the immersive room, with the tour of the town projected at 360° on the walls.
Results
The appeal of stepping into a painting, and into a town.
A museum well received and appreciated by visitors, with superior audio quality and an innovation that lets the Triptych be appreciated in all its depth. The immersive room takes visitors inside the town, its history and its heritage, with the 360° projection all around them.
Technology
Unreal Engine for the Triptych, DaVinci Resolve for the immersive room.
The Triptych is modelled in three dimensions from the high-resolution scan provided by the client and rendered in virtual reality with Unreal Engine; the application runs standalone on Meta Quest 3S, with no computer attached. The 3D models and textures are made with Blender, Affinity and Substance Designer and Painter. The immersive room is edited with DaVinci Resolve from 360° video and photographs, and projected at 360° on the walls.
Reuse
A dynamic, adaptable museum.
The technologies behind this museum can be adapted and reused to build other museums, whatever their content. Whether static or immersive paintings, 3D models and sculptures, or entire digital landscapes, the museum lends itself to the most varied requests. The immersive room, built from 360° video and photographs, adapts to any place or story to be projected on the walls.
